Rita and her Mom and Dad.
Rita is our most profoundly injured participant, the only one who was unable to speak for herself. Thus, most tragic of our stories is told entirely through the voice of her mother. A pedestrian run over by a car, Rita suffered catastrophic injuries, that were so severe, that she was denied any reasonable therapy. As the system labeled her incapable of benefitting from rehab, she was denied any chance. The struggles of her parents to keep her from harm are a horrible indictment of our TBI care system as it is evolving. While her recovery likely will never mirror that of the others on TBI Voices, lack of meaningful care is robbing her of any chance at recovery. But for her parents continued battle, she would likely not survive her survival.
